Hope Rises: Fiji’s Cold Case Unit Targets Unresolved Murders

The family of Salesh Chand, whose charred body was discovered in his vehicle on June 8, 2016, is expressing hope following the Fiji Police Force’s decision to create a dedicated cold case investigation unit. Ranjani Devi, Chand’s widow now living in Auckland, has long advocated for a thorough examination of her husband’s unresolved murder, criticizing the current investigative efforts.

Devi stated, “I have been saying for some time now that the police force needs to get the retired experienced police detectives to look into my husband’s unsolved murder. The detectives we have now have not been able to find any clue into my husband’s murder.” Despite the passage of almost nine years, she remains diligent in seeking justice.

The Fiji Police Chief, Rusiate Tudravu, recently acknowledged the resource limitations hindering the progress of various cold cases, including that of Chand. However, he expressed optimism that integrating former seasoned police officers into the new unit could significantly enhance investigative capabilities. This approach aims to tackle long-standing cases and restore public trust in the police force.

The establishment of this special unit is seen as a critical step towards addressing unresolved cases, including prominent incidents like the murder of Chand, and may provide some closure to families still seeking answers. As the police commit to renewing their investigative strategies, there is a shared hope within the community for a renewed focus on justice and accountability.

The efforts to re-engage retired detectives reflect a growing recognition of the need for experienced personnel in challenging investigations and could lead to revitalized police operations that will foster a safer environment in Fiji.
