A delegation from South Korea’s Dohwa Engineering recently engaged in a productive courtesy visit with Saimone Tauvoli, the Acting Permanent Secretary for Fisheries and Forestry. The discussion centered on anticipated improvements to the Makogai Mariculture Research Centre, a crucial site for marine research in Fiji.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from the ministry’s Research Division and focused on evaluating recent alterations to the project’s infrastructure design scope. They also addressed essential administrative and coordination needs as the project is expected to kick-off mid-year.

Tauvoli expressed enthusiasm about the planned enhancements, noting that the upgraded facilities at Makogai would significantly bolster Fiji’s capabilities in advanced mariculture research. He emphasized the importance of this project in reinforcing Fiji’s role as a center for climate change research, particularly concerning marine ecosystems.

The ministry, under Tauvoli’s leadership, is dedicated to collaborating with development partners to ensure the successful implementation of initiatives aimed at increasing research capacity, fostering sustainable fisheries development, and mitigating the effects of climate change.

The Makogai Mariculture Research Centre is instrumental in innovative fisheries research, contributing to national objectives for better marine resource management and resilience against the challenges presented by climate change. This collaboration reflects a commitment to enhancing scientific research in Fiji, promising a brighter future for its marine ecosystem management and sustainability efforts.
