Divided Voices: Fiji’s Opposition Faces Tensions Amid Constitutional Debate

A new image shared on social media has sparked discussions regarding the recent voting of opposition members against the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025 in Fiji. The photograph shows several opposition members engaging in a yaqona drinking ceremony at the home of MP Sanjay Kirpal, who notably did not vote during the critical session that led to the bill’s defeat.

Last week, Kirpal had supported the bill during its first reading but chose to abstain during the second round of voting. Other members of the former Fiji First party were present at the yaqona session, with Premila Kimar, Sachida Nand, and Shalen Kumar being the notable absentees. Both Nand and Kumar had voted in favor of the amendment.

This situation illustrates the ongoing divisions within Fiji’s political landscape, particularly among the opposition. Concerns over unity have been previously raised by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, stressing the importance of collective strength amidst conflicting opinions regarding constitutional changes. Kirpal recently addressed tensions within the party, stating they have faced unfair accusations of being “snakes” by their peers.

Historically, divisions within the opposition have highlighted a significant challenge as Fiji navigates its constitutional reform discussions. On a brighter note, the current exchanges signal a willingness for open dialogue, which could potentially lead to productive negotiations and strengthened democratic practices in the long run.

As Fiji’s political environment evolves, the hope for enhanced collaboration and transparency remains strong, reflecting the aspirations of the Fijian people for a governance system that truly embodies their collective values and rights.
