Diabetes Fiji is intensifying its initiatives aimed at combatting non-communicable diseases (NCDs) within the tourism sector by implementing health screenings and fitness programs. Volunteer Project Officer Peni Duitama has highlighted the organization’s collaboration with corporate partners, notably the InterContinental Resort within the IHG group, to analyze health trends among employees.
Last year, two health screenings took place in May and November, with a recent follow-up indicating generally satisfactory management of blood pressure; however, concerns have emerged regarding the increasing levels of obesity among employees. Duitama points out that unhealthy eating habits prevalent in hotel environments pose a significant challenge. As a result, Diabetes Fiji is prioritizing awareness campaigns and regular health screenings to ensure the well-being of tourism workers. He emphasized that merely standing or moving at work does not suffice; incorporating structured physical activity into daily routines is crucial.
Volunteer Therapist Tevita Saumalua noted that many workers tend to rely solely on dietary changes or herbal remedies while overlooking the importance of exercise, which plays a vital role in weight management and the control of NCDs. “We’ve developed principles to embed specific exercises into their daily routines, and the feedback has been very positive,” he stated.
Diabetes Fiji believes that consistent engagement in workplace wellness programs is essential for helping employees manage their weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more productive workforce in Fiji’s tourism sector. This proactive approach serves to enhance both the health of employees and the quality of service within the industry.
