A total of 13 communities gathered for the Cricket for Good Fiji program, held yesterday at Bidesi Park in Suva. This event marked the conclusion of the fifth season of the initiative, aimed at using cricket as a vehicle to impart essential life skills to children.
Program manager John Tuilagi shared insights about the day’s activities, which included a competition focused on developing life skills. Participants engaged in speeches that highlighted core values such as respect, honesty, and leadership. Prizes were awarded to reinforce these values, demonstrating the program’s commitment to character development among youth.
Encouraging community involvement was a key goal, and Tuilagi emphasized the outreach efforts made to local communities, aiming to benefit not just the participants, but the entire community. With many children on holiday, the program provided a joyful experience, particularly for those new to cricket, where they had the opportunity to learn the sport while enjoying the festivities.
Despite facing unfavorable weather conditions earlier in the week, the organizers were fortunate to have clear skies during the event, aiding in a successful turnout. Communities as distant as Navua and Galoa, as well as Nausori, were represented, showcasing a strong community spirit.
Tuilagi expressed gratitude toward the parents who supported their children and thanked Cricket Fiji and the coaches for their dedication to the program. This initiative aligns with Cricket Fiji’s broader commitment to enrich the sporting landscape and promote positive social change, notably in empowering youth and fostering inclusivity.
The Cricket for Good program extends through 2026, supported by the Australian government’s Team Up initiative, reflecting a sustainable investment in the future of youth cricket in Fiji.
The collaboration and engagement seen during this event underscore the positive impact that sports can have on community bonds and character development, promising a bright future for both cricket and the young participants involved.
