The Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua, has announced that he will refrain from interfering with the operational activities of the Fiji Police Force, particularly regarding internal corruption issues. Despite this, he emphasized the government’s dedication to combating corruption within the ranks of law enforcement.
Naivalurua stressed the importance of strong leadership within the police force to effectively address corruption at every level. “I have communicated my concerns to the police leadership about the imperative need to tackle corruption comprehensively,” he stated.
The Minister pointed out that established systems are in place for handling allegations of corruption within the police. He indicated that any criminal cases would be referred to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for independent assessment, ensuring a transparent process. Naivalurua reinforced the commitment to accountability, stating that these mechanisms are designed to hold officers accused of misconduct accountable.
Furthermore, Naivalurua urged the public to have faith in the processes and encouraged individuals with evidence of police misconduct to come forward. “If you have evidence against the police, bring it forward, and they will take the necessary action,” he said.
