During a recent media conference, Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for Trade in Fiji, emphasized that China should be viewed as a friend rather than a threat. His remarks come amid rising geopolitical tensions between Eastern and Western powers. Ali firmly stated, “I can definitely confirm that China is a friend and not a threat at all.”
He elaborated on the strong focus of both Fiji and Chinese authorities to enhance trade and investment opportunities, aiming for seamless operations with minimal disruptions. Reflecting on his recent trip to China, Ali expressed appreciation for the “warm red carpet treatment” he received, highlighting the potential for business collaboration.
Supporting Ali’s perspective, Liu Ke, the Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, echoed the sentiment that China poses no threat to Fiji or the region. He encouraged Fijian citizens to visit China to gain firsthand experience of the culture and hospitality there, urging them to move beyond assumptions based on media reports. “Travel and find out for yourselves,” Liu advised, suggesting that personal experience is crucial in forming an accurate understanding of China’s intentions.
Liu concluded, stating that operations and relations between Fiji and China will continue as usual, fostering hope for thriving business exchanges.
