Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has urged the Coalition Government of Fiji to abandon its grandstanding rhetoric in favor of actions that truly reflect leadership through example. He emphasized that for effective governance, it’s vital for the government to uphold and adhere to societal standards and norms of acceptable behavior.

Chaudhry expressed alarm over reports indicating that Fiji is downloading pornography at an alarming 15 terabytes, alongside a troubling rise in the online distribution of child sexual abuse materials. He highlighted the serious issue of children being coerced into generating explicit content for financial gain and likened the situation to a growing epidemic that demands urgent attention.

The Anti Pornography Taskforce plans to implement stricter measures to combat these issues, including proposals to block access to pornographic sites for children, an initiative that Chaudhry regards as essential. However, he calls into question the government’s commitment to creating a safer digital environment when previous instances of questionable leniency were shown, particularly regarding a former Cabinet minister linked to the circulation of personal pornographic videos.

He critiqued the Coalition Government’s apparent double standards, noting that it appears to punish ordinary citizens harshly while providing leniency to influential figures. This behavior, he argues, sends a troubling message to the youth about accountability and moral standards.

Chaudhry’s comments resonate deeply in the context of Fiji’s broader social issues, including growing concerns about child exploitation and the moral integrity of its leaders. He urged the current government to not only advocate for stronger regulations against pornography but also to embody the principles of integrity and accountability that they seek to enforce.

In summary, Chaudhry calls for the Fiji government to lead by example and take definitive action against moral decay in society, particularly in relation to child safety and online exploitation. By addressing these critical issues proactively, there is hope for fostering a safer environment for future generations. A more principled approach could be a crucial step towards restoring public trust and ensuring the well-being of the nation’s youth.
