The 1990 Woman of the Year Award took place at ANZ House in Suva, honoring Lady Merewalesi Tavaiqia with a prestigious plaque and a $1,500 prize, presented by Lady Bale Ganilau. As reported by The Fiji Times on December 14, 1990, Lady Merewalesi was selected from 32 nominees across various sectors, including business, education, and health, embodying the spirit of women’s contributions throughout Fiji.
The event was attended by around 150 guests, during which ANZ executive Bruce Avent highlighted the importance of the award as a celebration, not a competition. He acknowledged the crucial roles women play in leadership at both community and national levels, emphasizing their significant impact in diverse sectors.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Lady Merewalesi dedicated her award to all women in Fiji, saying, “I know there are many deserving women out there tonight, but I would like to say this, that I am receiving this award on behalf of all the women of Fiji, wherever they are.” Her recognition not only marked a personal milestone as the wife of Tui Vuda, Ratu Sir Josaia Tavaiqia, but also spotlighted the vital contributions of women to the fabric of Fijian society.
The event featured the participation of the Minister for Women and Culture, Adi Finau Tobakaucoro, and was hosted by Miss Hibiscus 1988, Lenora Qereqeretabua. Such gatherings emphasize the collective efforts and significant advancements made by women in Fiji, fostering a sense of unity and empowerment.
This historical celebration echoes contemporary events, like the recent SPBD Foundation awards in Suva, which honored around 2,500 women microbusiness owners for their economic contributions. Both occasions reflect a growing recognition of women’s roles in shaping their communities and enhancing the economy.
These awards serve not only to celebrate past achievements but also to inspire future generations of women in Fiji, encouraging them to chase their aspirations and instigate meaningful changes in their communities. The positive legacy of these recognitions is a testament to the enduring impact of women’s empowerment and leadership in Fiji.
