The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) has encouraged community members to capitalize on generous discounts available during Diwali while also considering the less fortunate members of society. NCCI president Dr. Ram Raju emphasized that Diwali is a significant interfaith festival that showcases Fiji’s rich multicultural and multiracial heritage.
During this festive season, many businesses flourish, offering bargain prices on household items and more. Dr. Raju pointed out that Diwali represents more than mere celebration; it is a distinctive festival that embodies Fiji’s collective identity. Particularly important in Hindu tradition, Diwali spans five days, culminating in joyous festivities filled with sweets, snacks, and vegetarian delicacies shared among family, friends, and even strangers.
Dr. Raju remarked that Diwali is a celebration of life, prosperity, and well-being—values that include peace, harmony, hope, goodwill, tolerance, and forgiveness. He noted that the festival unites entire communities, and Fijians have embraced the true essence of this festival of lights.
This year holds special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of Diwali being recognized as a public holiday in Fiji, a change initiated by the Alliance Government led by the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara in 1974. Moreover, the current Coalition Government under Sitiveni Rabuka has added another historic milestone by declaring Girmit Day as a public holiday, honoring the legacy of Indian laborers brought to Fiji during the Indenture System from 1879 to 1916.
In summary, Diwali not only brings joy and celebration but also fosters a spirit of community and shared heritage, reminding us of the importance of togetherness and support for one another, especially during festive times. The spirit of charity and inclusivity exemplified during Diwali continues to enrich Fiji’s diverse society and showcases the strength found in unity.
