The Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has announced an ongoing campaign to support street children in Fiji, addressing the growing concerns associated with their vulnerability. During a recent address to Parliament, she outlined the dangerous circumstances many of these children face, including drug abuse and an increased risk of contracting HIV.

Recognizing these challenges, Minister Kiran emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, “We are reaching out to children at risk living on our streets and, with the support of inter-agency cooperation, we’re working on pathways for vocational education and employment.” She noted the difficulties in providing these pathways while children remain on the streets and highlighted a pressing need for intervention centers that can offer shelter and rehabilitation support.

In the upcoming 2025-2026 budget, an allocation of $480,000 has been earmarked for constructing and operating a child wellbeing center, aimed at assisting these vulnerable children. Additionally, a separate budget of $195,652 will enhance drug rehabilitation services, emphasizing the importance of preparing children for education, employment, and reintegration into their families where possible.

Minister Kiran has also acknowledged a rise in the number of older individuals living on the streets, asserting their right to a dignified home. In alignment with this, HART Homes has committed to remodeling one of their facilities to accommodate the elderly population, demonstrating a concerted effort to address the needs of all vulnerable demographics.

This comprehensive approach underscores a growing commitment to social welfare in Fiji, reflecting collaborative efforts among various ministries and local organizations. The initiatives focus not just on immediate care but also on long-term solutions, which pave the way for a hopeful future for both youth and elderly individuals facing homelessness.

As the government continues to implement these plans, there is a positive outlook that with sustained collaboration and innovative programming, a supportive environment can be created, enabling every individual to thrive.
