The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission is demanding an immediate and independent inquest into the death of Richard Mock, who was discovered deceased on a vacant lot in Nadi earlier this month. The circumstances surrounding the death are particularly concerning as Mock allegedly died while in police custody. Chair of the Commission, Pravesh Sharma, expressed deep concern about the apparent lack of accountability in this case, stressing the importance of a transparent investigation to uncover the truth and bring justice for Mock’s family. He emphasized that everyone, including the police, must be held accountable to the law.

Sharma highlighted that the protection of human rights, particularly the right to life and dignity, must be maintained at all times. The Commission has formally reached out to the Fiji Police Force and is currently awaiting a response. Meanwhile, police officials indicated that officers on duty at the Namaka Police Station during Mock’s arrest have undergone Video Recorded Interviews as part of the inquiry process.

The ongoing investigation aims to compile statements and forensic evidence to determine the circumstances leading to Mock’s death. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and transparent, which is vital for maintaining community trust in law enforcement. He has expressed sympathy for Mock’s family and reiterated the necessity of accountability within police operations.

The demand for justice in Richard Mock’s case reflects a broader call for systemic improvements in law enforcement practices and an urgent emphasis on safeguarding the rights of individuals in police custody. As the investigation progresses, there is hope that it will bring clarity to this tragic incident and lead to meaningful changes that uphold the community’s trust in its police services.
