Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has demanded an immediate independent inquiry into the tragic passing of Ubayd Haider, previously known as Nathan Singh, and the operations of the Boxing Commission.
In his statement, Seruiratu emphasized the importance of safety in boxing, a sport known for its dangers. He expressed concern that, although the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) began an investigation after Ubayd was left in a coma, this action alone is insufficient.
“What we need is an independent inquiry,” he stated. This inquiry should not only look into the circumstances that led to Ubayd’s death but also investigate the overall operations and safety protocols of the BCF. Seruiratu highlighted alarming reports regarding the presence of epinephrine and needles in the warm-up area, which warrant a thorough examination.
He stressed that it is the responsibility of the Commission to honor Ubayd, his family, and the wider sporting community by ensuring that all safety protocols were adhered to and that the investigation is comprehensive. “An independent inquiry is essential to provide clarity and accountability for this tragedy, and to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future,” he asserted.
While the situation is undoubtedly tragic, the call for an independent inquiry may lead to crucial changes in safety protocols within the sport. This could foster a safer environment for athletes and reinforce the importance of stringent oversight in contact sports, ultimately honoring Ubayd’s legacy.
In summary, Seruiratu is advocating for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ubayd Haider’s death, emphasizing the need for accountability and improved safety measures within boxing.
