Building Futures: How a Community in Fiji Transformed Education Together

In 1971, Jonati Mavoa, the Minister for Social Services, inaugurated the Naitavuni District School in Naitasiri, marking a significant milestone for the local community. The school was built entirely by the residents, who undertook a two-hour journey by an outboard-driven punt along the Waidina River to attend the opening ceremony, as reported by The Fiji Times on March 30 of that year.

Minister Mavoa praised the villagers for their dedication and initiative in creating an educational facility without external assistance, emphasizing the importance of rural development. This school, situated in a remote area, was established to address the challenges faced by children from Delailasakau and Nasevou, who previously had to walk 20 miles to attend schools like the Roman Catholic Mission School at Vanuakula and the Nasele District School.

Recognizing the need for local education, Ratu Manueli Roseru of Nasevou shared that the community decided in 1970 to construct their own school. Through diligent fundraising efforts, including contributions from local labor and communal collections, they assembled enough resources to commence construction in just three months. Millers Ltd supported this initiative by providing materials worth $1,000 on credit, while locals, led by Maikeli TK Ratu, contributed their efforts to the building process.

This historical narrative resonates with contemporary efforts in the Nadovu community, where similar challenges regarding unsafe travel to Nailagobokala Primary School have spurred a collective response to improve school access. The villagers have taken it upon themselves to fundraise for necessary infrastructure upgrades, showcasing resilience and cooperation.
