Fiji’s U21 netball team, known as the Baby Pearls, took part in a community outreach initiative over the weekend, engaging with the Rabi Buakonikai Youth Sports in Toorak. This event is part of their broader strategy to connect with the community and promote netball among the youth.
Harvi Yee, the coordinator for Rabi Youth Sports, reported that the participants benefited significantly from the training session, gaining insights that will support their own development in sports. After this community engagement, the Baby Pearls returned to their rigorous training regimen in preparation for the upcoming Invitational Tournament.
In this competition, the Baby Pearls will be dividing their squad into two teams—Kacau and Kikau—chosen from an extended roster of 27 players. The tournament is expected to be highly competitive, featuring teams such as the South Coast Blaze and New South Wales Fijian U21 teams. Matches will take place at the Vodafone Arena in Suva from July 7 to 11.
Previous reports highlight the Baby Pearls’ growth and determination as they prepare for the 2025 Netball World Youth Cup in Gibraltar. Their recent performances, such as those in the Ruby North Competition, showcased their ability to compete against strong opponents and pointed to a promising future for netball in Fiji. The synergy between their community outreach and competitive aspirations underscores their commitment not only to sport but also to fostering local talent and inspiring future generations of athletes.
Overall, the Baby Pearls’ efforts reflect a hopeful outlook for the development of netball in Fiji, and their ongoing community engagement initiatives can play a pivotal role in enhancing the sport’s profile and encouraging greater participation among the youth.
