Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed that Australia will not dictate Fiji’s security matters, underscoring the nation’s sovereignty during a bilateral meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Denarau, Nadi. Rabuka expressed satisfaction at welcoming Albanese back to Fiji after his recent re-election.

Following a two-hour discussion, Rabuka characterized Australia as a vital ally, describing it as a “pillar of stability and growth” for Fiji. He emphasized that Australia’s role is one of cooperation rather than imposition: “No, they just want to cooperate with what we have as our program. They do not want to dictate; they want to cooperate.”

During the meeting, the leaders focused on regional cooperation, but notably, discussions about Fiji’s relationship with China were absent. Rabuka stated that Australia intends to support Fiji’s security and defense agenda without taking control over its decision-making.

Albanese is set to continue his diplomatic engagements, traveling next to the United States and Canada, where he will discuss collaborative opportunities in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, during a meeting with business leaders in Seattle. He will also attend the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.

This encounter between the two leaders signifies ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and mutual interests, while presenting a united front in addressing contemporary regional issues such as climate change and security. The emphasis on collaboration and understanding reflects a positive trajectory for both Fiji and Australia, promoting stability in the Pacific region amidst global challenges.
