The Matua Programme at Nabua Secondary School, located near Suva, is significantly enhancing the lives of its students. This initiative primarily benefits young individuals who, for various personal reasons, were unable to complete their high school education, offering them a much-needed second chance.

Nabua Secondary School stands out as the only institution in Fiji providing such an opportunity. Over the past twenty years, hundreds of adult learners have taken part in the programme, allowing them to finish their secondary education and continue on to tertiary studies.

Recently, more than 42 students celebrated their graduation from the programme. One of the graduates, Lusiana Turaga, expressed how the Matua Programme has reignited her motivation to achieve her educational aspirations. She noted that the diversity among the students created a rich and enlightening experience.

Ms. Turaga emphasized the importance of social inclusion for older citizens, highlighting how the programme recognizes their contributions and keeps them engaged in their communities. This initiative not only fosters social connections but also supports their overall well-being by offering access to better financial stability and essential services.

She articulated a shared ambition among the programme participants to evolve into improved versions of themselves.

The Matua Programme’s positive impact on its participants reflects a growing trend towards inclusivity in education, demonstrating that it’s never too late to pursue one’s educational dreams or to improve one’s quality of life, leaving a hopeful message for many who may feel left behind.

In summary, the Matua Programme is not only transforming individual lives but also contributing to a more inclusive society, proving that education can be a powerful tool for empowerment at any age.
