The Fiji National University recently celebrated the graduation of 384 students from its Rural, Remote and Maritime Technical and Vocational Education and Training (RRMTVET) Programme at the Valelevu Campus. This milestone event emphasized the importance of education in advancing both individual potential and community development.

Bob Mitchell, Director of Productivity and Innovation, highlighted that the ceremony symbolizes more than just the completion of training—it signifies the empowerment of individuals and their communities. He stated, “At FNU, we believe education must reach every community, regardless of location. Through programmes such as RRMTVET, we are crafting futures together by ensuring skills become stepping stones to financial independence and prosperity.”

The Chief Guest for the ceremony, Solicitor-General Ropate Green Lomavatu, praised FNU for playing a crucial role in cultivating a skilled workforce, which is vital for national resilience and sustainable development. He remarked, “A skilled labour force is the backbone of a resilient economy. Skilled workers build our infrastructure, support key industries and strengthen communities.”

The RRMTVET programme has expanded its reach, with six initiatives engaging 1,749 participants across various regions, including Nasautoka, Drekeniwai, Wainimakutu, Vunitogoloa, Narewa-Nakavu-Navoci-Nadi, and Wailoku-Newtown in 2025. Lomavatu encouraged graduates to utilize their newly acquired skills within their local communities before exploring opportunities abroad.

The training offered through the programme encompassed a wide array of practical skills, including cookery, baking, electrical installation, plumbing, construction, garment construction, joinery, floriculture, fiberglass repair, small engine repairs, screen printing, and land management.

FNU reiterated its dedication to supporting graduates by providing pathways for further education and skill enhancement, reinforcing the positive impact these initiatives have on both individuals and the broader community. This commitment not only enhances the graduates’ prospects but also contributes to the development of a robust economy in Fiji.
