Sydney-based featherweight boxer Runqi Zhou has not entered into any agreement to face Fiji’s new lightweight champion, Mikaele Ravalaca, in May. This announcement was confirmed by Zhou’s manager, Tony Tolj, who stated that they have declined the proposed matchup multiple times since its initial offer back in January.
Tolj expressed concerns over the weight class for the fight, as Ravalaca is set to compete at 59 kilograms, whereas Zhou, who holds the IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title, competes at 57 kilograms. Zhou’s trainer, Angelo Hyder, echoed these sentiments, stating that the financial compensation offered was also insufficient for Zhou to consider the bout.
In May, Zhou is scheduled to participate in a World Boxing Council (WBC) sanctioned Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia, which further complicates any potential fight with Ravalaca in Suva. Tolj reiterated their commitment to Zhou’s participation in this event, emphasizing that there has been no formal agreement for the fight in Fiji.
This announcement contrasts sharply with previous excitement generated by promoter Samir Khan of Bluewater Boxing Promotions, who had voiced intentions for Zhou to defend his title against Ravalaca. Ravalaca himself had shown enthusiasm for the fight, viewing it as a major opportunity.
The boxing scene in Fiji has been gaining momentum, highlighted by Ravalaca’s recent knockout victory against Mohammed Ali, which marked a significant moment in his career. This evolving landscape presents hope for both rising talents like Ravalaca and the sport’s future in the region.
Zhou’s unavailability does, however, raise questions about the direction of enticing matchups in Fijian boxing, as promoters and fans seek to witness compelling contests that showcase local talent on international platforms.
