Young Leaders Rise: Inspiring Stories from Fiji’s Dreketi Central College

In an inspiring story from Fiji, Iliesa Mataqeledra, a 17-year-old student at Dreketi Central College, recently achieved the distinguished role of headboy, a milestone he dedicated to his late father, who passed away just days before the school year began. The young leader, hailing from Nadoviri Settlement in Macuata, faced the emotional challenge of returning to school shortly after the loss.

Reflecting on this experience, Iliesa, the youngest of four siblings, shared, “Being strong for my mother was important, and I decided to return to school to honor my father’s legacy.” He expressed surprise upon learning of his selection as headboy during the prefect induction ceremony, which took place last Friday. Iliesa is particularly proud to be the first in his family to hold this leadership position and extended his gratitude to the teachers who believed in him.

Alongside Iliesa, Patrica Cox, 18, was named headgirl. She also expressed appreciation for her teachers’ support. Currently living with her elderly grandfather in Matasawalevu Settlement, Macuata, while her parents are away, Patrica, who aspires to be a pilot, has taken on significant responsibilities at home, including managing household chores and caring for her three younger siblings. Her strong commitment to her family and school reflects her dedication to achieving high academic standards.

Both students are part of a student body that includes around 400 learners from Year Nine to Year 13. Their stories symbolize resilience in the face of personal challenges and the importance of community support in nurturing young leaders.

This narrative sheds light on the strength found in the bonds of family and the dedication of students striving for excellence despite adversity. The achievements of young individuals like Iliesa and Patrica remind us that with perseverance and support, hope remains alive even during the most challenging times.
