In Labasa, Vasitia Waqaninavatu has made history by becoming the head girl of Waiqele Primary School for 2025, a significant feat for her family. With pride, Vasitia, who hails from Nakama Village, shared that she is the first in her family to achieve this leadership role, attributing her success to diligent effort and devoted prayer during her previous year as deputy head girl. “Being a leader isn’t always easy since we can’t please everyone, but I strive to uphold integrity in our school environment,” she remarked.

Vasitia, the third of five siblings, is committed to guiding her peers towards achieving good academic results in Year Eight. Similarly, Kreeshal Kumar, appointed as head boy, expressed surprise at his new title, stating he never anticipated winning the position despite serving as deputy head boy the previous year. He credited his father, the family’s sole provider, for his educational support, as Kreeshal dreams of becoming an aerospace engineer.

Both Vasitia and Kreeshal will lead a team of 25 prefects responsible for overseeing the conduct of 130 students ranging from Year One to Year Eight. Their leadership journey reflects a broader trend observed across schools in Fiji, where young leaders strive for academic excellence while navigating personal challenges and aspirations.

This story echoes the inspiring narratives of other student leaders from various schools in Fiji, like Iliesa Mataqeledra from Dreketi Central College, who dedicated his head boy role to his late father, or Miriama Watikili and Mesake Cokanauto from All Saints Secondary School, who are also recognized for their leadership despite coming from humble backgrounds. These accounts illustrate the resilience and courage of Fiji’s youth as they pursue their dreams and support their peers in creating a positive educational environment.

The powerful interpretation of leadership among young achievers highlights that despite their humble origins, dedication and community support can pave the path for success. It emphasizes that with perseverance and commitment, the youth can bring transformative changes to their schools and communities, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
