Heritage Auctions has announced an exciting opportunity for fans of classic cinema with the upcoming sale of a notable black hat worn by Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West in the iconic film “The Wizard of Oz.” This wool hat, which stands nearly 35 cm high with a 49 cm diameter brim, features a 55 cm elastic chin strap that Hamilton utilized during her flying scenes to keep it secure.
Designed by the renowned costume designer Adrian Adolph Greenburg, also known as Gilbert Adrian, this particular hat was introduced during filming due to the original selection not being menacing enough. Joe Maddalena, EVP of Heritage Auctions, emphasized the hat’s significance, stating, “When the Wicked Witch becomes the Wicked Witch, she puts on the hat,” framing it as a transformative moment akin to Dorothy’s donning of the ruby slippers.
The auction, set for December 9 and 10 both online and at Heritage’s Dallas headquarters, will feature a plethora of memorabilia from “The Wizard of Oz.” Among the items are a signed book featuring Judy Garland’s lengthy inscription and the paw prints of Toto, which was gifted to the daughter of Garland’s on-set tutor. Two versions of the famous ruby slippers will also be up for bid: one, a right-foot shoe worn during rehearsals, adorned with crimson-burgundy glass beads, and a replica made for the film’s 50th anniversary.
Additional lots include a handwritten letter by Frank Baum, the author of “The Wizard of Oz,” and a blouse worn by Garland in the film, further enhancing the auction’s allure. This follows last year’s record-setting sale, where a different pair of ruby slippers fetched a staggering $28 million, underscoring the enduring fascination and market value of Wizard of Oz collectibles.
This auction not only celebrates the rich legacy of one of cinema’s most beloved films but also highlights the emotional connections and nostalgia that such artifacts evoke. As collectors and fans prepare for the event, there lies a hopeful sentiment that the iconic pieces from “The Wizard of Oz” will continue to inspire future generations while preserving the vibrant history of the film industry.
