A remarkable 84 teams are gearing up to participate in the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSLR) for the 2026 season, highlighting the tournament’s expanding footprint across Fiji’s Southeastern and Western Zones. Naisa Cama Toko, the president of the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League, emphasized the substantial growth in the competition, with new schools joining and a mix of familiar and emerging talent set to showcase their skills.
This year, the tournament comprises 56 teams from 29 schools in the Southeastern Zone, alongside 29 teams from 19 schools in the Western Zone. Notably, the league welcomes two new schools from Levuka—St John’s College Cawaci and Levuka Public School—while Naiyala Secondary School returns after a three-year absence. Additionally, Ratu Navula is among the returning teams from the West, rekindling interest and enthusiasm for the league among fans and players alike.
The FSSLR continues to feature three age categories: Under 15, Under 17, and Under 19. Toko, however, expressed aspirations to expand beyond these age groups, though he acknowledged that such growth hinges on securing adequate funding and proper timing. “Investment in the sport is crucial, especially as we see many young talents being scouted overseas,” he noted, highlighting the vitality of rugby league in the region.
The continuity of Vodafone Fiji’s support remains a cornerstone for the league’s operations, with the company contributing $200,000 annually. Toko recognizes this long-term partnership, stating, “For two decades, Vodafone has been the lifeblood of our association. Their continued support is instrumental in sustaining and growing the competition.”
This season’s kick-off is set for Saturday at the Saint Marcellin primary school grounds for the Southeastern Zone, with matches also taking place across several venues in the Western Zone, including Sigatoka, Lautoka, Nadi, and Ra. The tournament will progress through multiple rounds, concluding with national quarter-finals in Suva, semi-finals in Lautoka, and the grand final at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
Toko has rallied fans and local communities to show their support for the teams, emphasizing the importance of attendance and encouragement. “We urge everyone to come out in numbers, support our players, and enjoy the thrilling rugby league action. Your support, both moral and financial, is crucial to the success and growth of this wonderful sport,” he encouraged.
With a record number of participating teams and an exciting lineup, the 2026 season of the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League is shaping up to be one of the most memorable in its history, promising thrilling matches and fostering community spirit around the sport.
