The All Black Sevens team is set to travel to the World Sevens Series events in New York and Vancouver without their head coach, Tomasi Cama, due to complications with his visa application. New Zealand Rugby announced on Tuesday that Cama will not be joining the team, which departs today for the tournaments.
Despite being appointed as head coach in August 2023, Cama’s visa issues have prevented him from making the trip alongside the team. New Zealand Rugby explained that the processing of his visa could not be completed in time for travel.
In his absence, assistant coach Willie Rickards will assume head coach responsibilities, supported by Scott Curry as his assistant. This coaching adjustment comes as the All Black Sevens prepare for back-to-back tournaments, with the Vancouver event scheduled for March 7-8, followed by the New York tournament on March 14-15.
Cama has had a distinguished career in rugby, participating in 128 tournaments and earning the World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year Award in 2012. His experience will still play a vital role in the team’s preparations as they navigate this challenging situation. With Rickards at the helm, the All Blacks will look to continue their strong performance in the series despite the coaching shakeup.
