The grassroots Vatulele 7s tournament, backed by the Fiji Sports Council, wrapped up yesterday at Lawaqa Park, representing a significant effort to rejuvenate community rugby on the island of Vatulele. The two-day event served as a crucial platform to revive local rugby following an extended period of dormancy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Apenisa Vodo, the President of the Vatulele Rugby Union, expressed his appreciation for the support received, noting that it has been instrumental in reactivating the Union. “It’s been a while since COVID and we are trying to activate the Union again,” Vodo stated. He highlighted the enthusiasm among local elders who traveled to witness the tournament, reflecting a community eager to see the return of Vatulele rugby in a vibrant manner.

The tournament was not only a celebratory event but also a milestone for many participants from the island who experienced traveling to Viti Levu for such a competition for the first time. The funds raised during the event will be allocated to support the Union and assist local players, who largely rely on traditional occupations such as tapa farming and fishing for their livelihoods.

In the final results, Dominion Brothers emerged victorious against Loloma with a score of 12–7 in the Under-21 Bowl final. Meanwhile, Bula Brothers triumphed over Army Red with a close score of 17–12 in the Men’s Bowl competition, showcasing the competitive spirit and camaraderie that such events foster within the community.

This tournament not only marks a revival of rugby but also highlights the resilience of the Vatulele community, united through sport and tradition.
