Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Baron Waqa has underscored the necessity for a united regional approach to security in light of escalating global and regional threats. Opening the Pacific Regional and National Security Conference in Suva, Waqa emphasized that constructing a safer Pacific requires collaborative efforts across sectors and institutions.

Acknowledging the region’s vulnerability to external conflicts, including ongoing tensions in the Middle East and war in Eastern Europe, Waqa noted that repercussions are already being felt in the Pacific through economic impacts and changing perceptions. He called for the development of a flexible and inclusive regional security mechanism focused on prevention and trust-building.

The conference, gathering security leaders from the Pacific and beyond, aims to advance the objectives outlined in both the Boe Declaration Action Plan and the Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace Declaration. Waqa emphasized that the Boe Declaration reinforces a comprehensive approach to security, integrating human security, humanitarian assistance, and environmental concerns into national strategies.

Highlighting the Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace initiative, Waqa invited regional partners to commit to leading with peace, fostering collaboration in conflict prevention, and prioritizing the protection of both people and the environment. He reiterated historical commitments against nuclear threats, referencing the Rarotonga Treaty, as a vital symbol of regional solidarity.

Participants in the conference were encouraged to adopt a bold mindset and collaborate closely as they outline future steps toward a peaceful and secure Pacific. Waqa’s remarks resonate with a shared commitment among Pacific leaders to establish robust frameworks for security that not only address immediate threats but also reflect local values and cultural contexts.

This progressive outlook from regional leaders offers hope for a more collaborative future, where unity and mutual support become the cornerstones of Pacific security initiatives. By nurturing partnerships across nations, there is potential for meaningful advancements in peace and stability that can safeguard the Pacific for future generations.
