Police have launched an investigation after about 20 bullets were found in a packet along the Nadiridiri feeder road in Wainibuku on Wednesday morning.

The ammunition was discovered at about 8:00am by a member of the public who was taking her child to school, police said. The woman spotted the packet on the roadside and reported the find to authorities. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the report, saying investigations are underway.

Naisoro did not disclose the type or calibre of the rounds, whether the scene was cordoned off or if any forensic tests had begun. There were no immediate reports of suspects or a suspected crime scene linked to the discovery, and police have not said whether the ammunition is believed to be part of a larger cache or connected to any ongoing cases.

The morning discovery has heightened local concern because it occurred during the school run. Authorities will need to establish how the bullets came to be on a public feeder road and whether there are any public safety implications. Police investigations are expected to focus on tracing the origin of the ammunition and determining whether it was deliberately dumped or lost.

The find is the latest policing matter to draw attention in the Wainibuku area. Earlier this month police appealed for public help to identify a woman whose body was found near a riverbank in Wainibuku on March 2. Separately, in late February firearms and ammunition were discovered at the Fiji Sugar Corporation’s Lautoka mill, prompting another police inquiry. Police have not linked the Nadiridiri feeder road discovery to those incidents.

Authorities say they will update the public as inquiries progress. Anyone with information about the bullets found on the Nadiridiri feeder road is asked to contact local police.
