A slow-moving trough of low pressure, embedded in a moist easterly flow, is bringing widespread showers, occasional thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls across much of Fiji. The heavy rain alert that was previously in force for the whole group has been cancelled, but unsettled conditions will continue into tomorrow as the trough drifts southeastwards.
Expect occasional rain and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls today over the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, the whole of Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, southern parts of Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere there will be occasional rain, with afternoon or evening thunderstorms possible and isolated heavy falls. These localised heavy falls could lead to brief flash flooding in low-lying or flood-prone areas, so residents in susceptible locations should remain alert.
Winds are expected to be a moderate easterly, fresh at times and gusty in stronger squalls. Sea conditions will be moderate to rough, and mariners and small-craft operators should exercise caution in exposed waters while the trough remains in the vicinity.
Local details: Navua, Suva and Nausori will see occasional rain with afternoon or evening thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls, easing to showers from tomorrow (min 23°C, max 30°C; Saturday outlook min 23°C, max 31°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba should expect showers that become frequent and increase to rain later today, then easing to mainly showers from tomorrow (min 23°C, max 32°C). Labasa will also see showers increasing to rain later today before conditions improve to mostly fine with some showers tomorrow (min 21°C, max 32°C). The Yasawa and Mamanuca group will have occasional rain and late-day thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls before easing to mostly fine weather apart from evening showers (min 23°C, max 31°C). Rotuma will continue to experience occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms under a moist easterly flow with moderate seas (min 23°C, max 31°C).
The outlook for Saturday is for occasional showers across Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri, Ra‑Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby islands, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere is expected to be generally fine apart from afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms. Winds will remain moderate to fresh and gusty at times, with seas continuing moderate to rough.
