The parents of Judah Waqa, a teenager accused of brutally assaulting and robbing a 65-year-old woman in 2023, have been ordered to pay $600 for their son’s bond after he was found to have provided false information during a court appearance. The court’s action followed a request for bail revocation by the State Prosecution.
Waqa, appearing alongside co-defendant Mosese Luveitasau, faced Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu at the High Court in Suva to check on the status of their upcoming trial. Both men are charged with aggravated robbery after allegedly breaking into a couple’s home in Koronivia, assaulting Maya Wati, and stealing valuables, including a gold watch, jewelry, a Samsung phone, and $400 in cash.
During the hearing, State prosecutor Zenith Zunaid pointed out that Waqa had misled the court on December 12 of the previous year by claiming he was late due to traffic. Zunaid revealed that Waqa had been arrested that morning for possession of marijuana, which constituted a breach of his bail conditions.
Waqa’s defense lawyer acknowledged the situation but urged the court for leniency, noting that he had attended all court hearings. Justice Bulamainaivalu expressed concern over the lack of communication with Waqa’s parents, who were supposed to ensure his appearance in court. Ultimately, the judge opted for an alternative consequence, allowing Waqa’s bail to continue while holding his parents financially accountable.
Waqa’s parents, Tui Takali Waqa and Ana Rokolia, are required to appear in court again on April 24 for further discussions as Waqa’s bail is extended, leaving them with a balance of $700 from their initial bond.
This case underscores the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining accountability among defendants on bail while ensuring that young individuals like Waqa have a chance to rehabilitate. The legal proceedings highlight an opportunity for reflection on the importance of truthfulness in court, as well as the role of family in the judicial process. The hope remains that with guidance and oversight, Waqa can learn from this experience and move towards a more positive path.
