The Nasinu Town Council has urged local residents to take greater care in the disposal of their household waste. Jone Tuiono, the chairperson of the council’s Special Administrators, expressed concerns regarding the negative impact of careless waste disposal, such as leaving rubbish improperly by the roadside, which complicates the work of garbage collectors.
Tuiono pointed out that improper disposal occurs in approximately 90 percent of cases, often due to insufficiently secured bags and bins, which leads to spills and attracts stray animals. He emphasized the importance of separating waste, stating that food scraps can draw these animals, and that torn bags create additional challenges and delays for waste collection efforts.
To maintain efficiency in waste management, the council reminded residents not to dispose of their rubbish when skip bins are full or in transit for cleaning, as this contributes to illegal dumping and may incur penalties. The improper disposal practices not only disrupt collection schedules but also place added strain on the garbage collection system.
Furthermore, Tuiono mentioned the risks associated with using open garbage trucks, although the council is committed to minimizing these issues to serve the community effectively. He called upon ratepayers and non-traditional dwellers to adhere to set schedules for waste disposal, properly sort their waste, and avoid illegal dumping.
In addition, he made it clear that burning waste in skip bins or disposing of deceased animals is strictly prohibited. The council is actively engaged in educating residents about proper waste management and the significance of a clean environment, although Tuiono acknowledged that there is still much progress to be made.
He concluded by encouraging collaboration among all community stakeholders and media partners to foster a cleaner, healthier, and more vibrant nation.
This initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to community engagement and environmental stewardship, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean and safe environment. By fostering awareness and cooperation, Nasinu’s residents can contribute significantly to improving waste management practices and enhancing the quality of life in their community.
