Weather Update
Brought to you by the National Weather Forecasting Centre, and your friendly neighborhood weatherman at 10:45 am on May 12, 2025.
Hold onto your hats, folks! A STRONG WIND WARNING is still flapping its way through the Northern Division, Kadavu and its pint-sized islands, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. If you’re in those areas, it might be a good day to reconsider any elaborate hairstyle!
In case you were wondering, yesterday’s strong wind warning for the coastal areas of the Eastern and Southern parts of Viti Levu (from Sigatoka all the way to Rakiraki) and the Yasawa group has decided to let itself off the hook. You’re in the clear!
That heavy rain warning for the Northern Division, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups? Well, it’s downgraded to an ‘all clear’ with just an alert. The rest of the Fiji group is on dry ground now, as the earlier warning has been officially canceled.
What’s going on today? Let’s break it down:
Today:
Brace yourselves for some strong northwesterly to southerly winds ranging up to 55 km/h, with gusts blasting up to 65 km/h. This will be especially noticeable over Kadavu, the Northern Division, and all the little islands wanting some excitement.
For our guests on the waves: rough to very rough seas! A bit bouncy, so you might want to leave the fancy dinnerware at home.
You can expect occasional rain—heavy at times with some rather enthusiastic thunderstorms in the Northern Division, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups. The rain is expected to simmer down to showers later today.
Meanwhile, Nadroga-Navosa, Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, and Tailevu-Naitasiri will be clouding up with some showers, while other regions will enjoy partially cloudy conditions with a few rogue brief showers. And let’s not forget: it’s going to cool down nicely at night—ideal weather for cozying up and telling ghost stories!
Tomorrow:
We’ll see south to southeast winds waving hello, hitting around 45 km/h over Lau and Lomaiviti. Elsewhere, expect moderate to fresh breezes with a bit of gusty flair.
The seas will remain rugged—nothing too out of the ordinary for a day at sea.
Clouds will hover with brief showers in certain areas, but don’t worry—there will be sunshine making appearances too. The night will be cool, a perfect excuse for hot cocoa!
Looking ahead to Wednesday, we’ve got more cloudy periods and brief showers popping up like unexpected guests at a party over Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, and surrounding areas. Mainly fine elsewhere—so don’t forget your sunblock!
Specific areas’ forecasts:
For Navua/Suva/Nausori: Cloudy with showers. Tonight, grab a sweater—it’s cool!
For Sigatoka/Coral Coast: Just some cloudy periods and the chance of showers, followed by cool evenings.
For Nadi/Lautoka/Ba: Partly cloudy with an odd shower. Get ready for a cool night!
For Tavua/Rakiraki: Partly cloudy with a brief shower or two. Bring your blanket for the cool night!
For Natadradave/Korovou: More clouds and showers. Don’t forget a cozy setup for the cool night!
For Yasawa/Mamanuca: It’s partly cloudy with only brief showers and delightful coolness.
For Labasa and Savusavu: Hold tight as strong winds continue today, followed by some rain and thunderstorms, unless you prefer to stay under your duvet.
For Lau/Lomaiviti and Kadavu: Strong winds and noticeable showers are forecasted—but brace yourselves for a calmer tomorrow, finishing off with an enchanting cool night.
And for Rotuma: A STRONG WIND WARNING remains in place, so make sure you’re not sailing with your best china! Rough seas with occasional rain and a few thunderstorm visitors will make for an interesting day.
So, grab your umbrellas and hold onto your hats—Fiji weather is certainly putting on a show!
