“Rediscovering Roots: A Journey to Ancestral Heritage”

On April 28, the inspiring journey of Naren Prasad was shared, illustrating his quest to reconnect with his ancestral roots in a small village in Uttar Pradesh, India. Prasad tracked down his maternal great-grandfather, Bhagwan, through an Emigration Pass from 1907 issued in Calcutta.

During his visit to India this year, accompanied by his friend Dheeraj, Prasad experienced a heartfelt reception upon arriving at the village. “Word had spread that a descendant of a Girmitiya had come back,” he recounted. The villagers welcomed him with open arms, treating him as a returning son rather than a stranger. This warm reception was marked by garlands, joyous laughter, and a significant feeling of recognition, as villagers shared stories and memories that connected them to Prasad’s heritage.

As he explored the village, Prasad was overwhelmed with emotion. “I knelt down and touched the soil,” he reflected, feeling a profound connection to his past and realizing that his family’s sense of disconnection had finally found closure. He noted that there was a powerful acceptance of him by the villagers, with no questions about his identity, which made him feel wholly embraced.

Prasad described the experience as “one of the most emotionally powerful experiences of my life,” emphasizing the importance of ancestry and cultural identity, particularly for Fijians of Indian descent who often grapple with a feeling of being “from somewhere, but not of somewhere.” His journey highlighted how important it is for individuals to explore their heritage intimately and personally, especially as many members of the Indian diaspora seek to understand their roots.

This experience not only reconnected Prasad with his ancestral village but also allowed him to recognize how the traditions and resilience of his ancestors shaped his identity. His story resonates with others, including that of Irshaad Nabi, who explored connections to his family history originating from indentured labor in Fiji, echoing similar themes of cultural heritage and belonging.

Prasad encourages others who feel a pull toward their ancestry to honor that curiosity. He emphasizes that such journeys can deepen one’s understanding and appreciation of identity, stating that reconnecting with his roots brought him clarity and a heightened sense of purpose. He expressed gratitude for the support he received during his journey and emphasized the strength that lies in understanding one’s heritage.

In a world where many seek belongingness, Prasad’s story stands out as a beautiful reminder that exploring our roots and embracing our ancestry can enhance our sense of self and connection to broader communities, transcending distance and time.
