Strengthening Bonds: New Beginnings for the Pacific Islands Forum in Kiribati

Forum Secretary General Baron Waqa concluded a fruitful visit to Kiribati, as he engaged with the government in a high-level consultation on Friday. This marked Waqa’s inaugural visit as Secretary General, where he was warmly received by President Taneti Maamau. The President emphasized the importance of being physically present to better understand the nation’s unique challenges and realities.

In his discussions, Waqa acknowledged Kiribati’s continuing leadership and proactive engagement at the regional level, an essential factor in the current geopolitical climate. The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) team had the opportunity to meet with other notable government figures, including Vice-President Teuea Toatu and representatives from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development. Their visit included an exploration of the new PIF sub-regional office in Bairiki, Tarawa, which illustrates Kiribati’s commitment to collaborating with the Forum.

Waqa remarked, “This sub-regional office serves as a vital testament to Kiribati’s dedication to engaging closely with the Forum, enabling us to listen and understand the realities on the ground.” The PIFS team also facilitated a workshop with various government ministry representatives, where they shared insights on the Secretariat’s ongoing work in diverse sectors. This initiative was well received, promoting a collaborative approach to achieving regional goals.

This visit reflects an ongoing trend of heightened engagement in the Pacific Islands Forum, echoing themes from previous meetings, such as a focus on gender equality and regional development. It underscores an encouraging sentiment towards unity and cooperation among Pacific nations, fostering hope for more coordinated efforts in addressing challenges like climate change, economic development, and enhancing the welfare of communities across the region.

Overall, the visit signifies a continued commitment to strengthening partnerships and finding solutions collectively, paving the way for a more resilient and collaborative Pacific Islands Forum.
