Fresh from representing the Fiji Airways Men’s 7s team, Sakiusa Siqila is set to don the crest of Suva in the forthcoming Skipper Cup competition. His return to 15s rugby is anticipated to infuse the team with both experience and vitality after a rigorous 7s season.
Currently, the national squad is on a break, allowing players to focus on familial ties, physical recovery, and mental rejuvenation. In this time, Siqila is not only reflecting on his past performances but also preparing for the challenges ahead, particularly in transitioning back to the 15s format, which he is familiar with, having started his career in this discipline before switching to 7s.
“Something that I’m used to because I started off my career in 15s, I later switched to 7s, so then coming back to 15s is good for me,” Siqila stated, highlighting his comfort with the format. As Suva gears up for club games under the Covenant Sports Ministry club, he aims to gain critical match experience before the Skipper Cup, which kicks off in August.
This transition reflects the adaptability required in rugby and shows the depth of talent within Fiji’s rugby scene. Siqila’s experience from the 7s will serve him well, contributing not only to his individual performance but also to the overall strength of the Suva team.
The upcoming Skipper Cup is expected to be a competitive festivity, and with Siqila’s experience onboard, there is optimism that the capital squad can mount a strong challenge. As fans await the tournament, the combination of seasoned players returning to 15s rugby with emerging talents creates a hopeful narrative for Fiji’s rugby legacy.
