Former parliamentarian Simione Rasova has received approval to travel to Australia to participate in the Liberal Party’s Campaign Summer School and International Programme. This decision was reached despite significant opposition from the prosecution, underscoring the complexity of his legal situation.
Rasova will embark on his journey to Canberra today, January 27, and will remain there until February 4. He will be attending in his official role as the General Secretary of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA).
Magistrate Pulekeria Low noted that while there are serious allegations against Rasova, the public interest can still be protected through stringent bail conditions. “The accused is still innocent until proven guilty per our Constitution,” she stated, affirming the legal principle of presumption of innocence.
The former parliamentarian faces charges of allegedly misrepresenting his permanent place of residence, which prosecutors claim allowed him to receive $21,350 in allowances from July 2019 to April 2020 that he was not entitled to. A substantive hearing to address these charges is scheduled for February 9, where the issues at hand will be examined more closely.
