Nightclub proprietors are advocating for an extension of operating hours during significant festive occasions. They argue that the existing constraints make it challenging for both customers and businesses to adapt, particularly as many patrons typically arrive later in the evening.
Albert Chand, the owner of Deep Sea Union Tavern, emphasized that most customers tend to come in around 10 or 11 PM. However, when they finally settle in and order drinks, they are often met with the impending closing time. Chand stated, “Most of our patrons, they come into the clubs like 10ish, 11pm. And when they settle down with a couple of bottles of beer, it’s time to close again.”
He acknowledged that nightclub operators are diligently following regulations and collaborating closely with law enforcement. However, the reduced hours have intensified the challenges facing their businesses. “Some of us nightclub owners are facing really hard times now…our obligations are still the same almost now with all the new wage rates and electricity and all going up,” he shared.
Chand is appealing to the authorities to consider a temporary extension of hours solely during special occasions. He suggested an extension until 3 AM for events such as Christmas, New Year, and Hibiscus. “We’re asking for the government if they can consider our request…until about 3am in the morning, only on festive seasons,” he said.
Meanwhile, the police continue to work with nightclub operators to ensure adherence to regulations while maintaining public safety.
As nightlife returns to vibrancy, this plea for extended hours reflects a broader desire to cultivate a more accommodating environment for both patrons and business owners during cherished celebrations. By granting limited extensions during peak festive periods, authorities could indeed enhance the nightlife experience while supporting local businesses.
