The Ministry of Agriculture recognized the late Minister Vatimi Rayalu’s contributions to the project, emphasizing the seawall’s importance as a beacon of resilience in the face of land degradation that has affected the Lakeba Hospital quarters over the years.
Constructed with a government investment of approximately $250,000, the 150-meter boulder revetment seawall serves not only to safeguard critical government infrastructure but also to preserve the integrity of the local coastline. Marau Vuli, Director for Waterways, highlighted the adverse effects of climate variability on the island’s foreshore, stating that the implementation of boulder revetments is a strategic approach to reclaim eroded land while reinforcing essential structures.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts across Fiji to combat environmental challenges faced by coastal communities. For instance, similar projects are underway, such as the seawall construction in Navolau, Rakiraki, aimed at mitigating coastal erosion and flooding, and an enhancement initiative in Namoli Village, Lautoka, focusing on preventative measures against flooding due to heavy rainfall and inadequate drainage systems.
