Samoa’s Bold Move for Gender Equality: A Turning Point Unveiled

Samoa’s Chief Executive Officer for Women, Community, and Social Development, Loau Donina Va’a, has highlighted the significant strides made towards gender equality during her address to Commonwealth delegations at the United Nations’ annual gender meeting, CSW69. She described last October’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia as a turning point for gender equality initiatives.

Loau, part of a seven-member delegation including civil society representatives and headed by Minister Laga’aia Tufuga, expressed that the CHOGM and its accompanying Commonwealth Women’s Forum (CWF) showcased Samoa’s commitment to advancing gender equality, youth empowerment, and economic inclusion. Over 400 delegates from 56 Commonwealth nations participated in the Forum, which emphasized the Pacific’s active leadership role in global dialogues on gender issues.

During the event, Loau stressed that Samoa’s success was not merely a result of hosting an event but rather a movement that united the nation. She noted, “We serve – and it is in service that we create lasting change,” underscoring a collaborative spirit among various stakeholders, including grassroots organizations and Pacific youth.

As a key element of progress, the CWF led to the establishment of a national taskforce composed of 20 influential Samoan women across different sectors. This initiative strengthened the dialogue on gender-responsive policies and allocated 20% of Samoa’s annual budget towards women-led projects.

The vibrant Manaia Market at CHOGM, featuring over 40 talent-filled women entrepreneurs, illustrated the economic empowerment of women, positioning them as drivers of resilience and innovation in Samoa. Minister Tufuga emphasized the need for respect and understanding to tackle societal issues.

Looking forward, Loau highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum for gender equality. She called for collaborative efforts, emphasizing the need for leadership that prioritizes gender equity and accountability in results.

Amid the discussions at CSW69, there is a palpable sense of hope for a more inclusive future. Samoa is not only participating in the global dialogue on gender equality but is actively shaping it, offering a model for other nations in the Pacific region and beyond. The commitment made by leaders, youth, and women to address these issues lays a strong foundation for continual progress.

In conclusion, the collaborative efforts and proactive measures undertaken by Samoa encapsulate a hopeful narrative for the advancement of gender equality, signaling that with shared purpose and determination, transformative change is achievable.
