Lami High School’s Under-17 rugby team is focused on taking each match as it comes as they participate in the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union competition. Despite facing a tough start with a 5-36 loss to Suva Grammar School during their opening game at the Suva Grammar School grounds, the team’s management remains optimistic.
Team manager Poasa Soqonakalou acknowledged the financial challenges impacting team members but emphasized their determination to continue playing rugby. Reflecting on the tough match against the previous year’s champions, he stated, “We expected it was going to be a tough match, but we will go back to the drawing board, work on our mistakes, and prepare for our upcoming games.” He pointed out that the success of the Under-19 team last year has motivated them to elevate their performance.
The team is working hard to build upon the achievements of the previous year’s Under-19 champions, which has united stakeholders and alumni, fostering a supportive environment for the current players. Soqonakalou noted that the postponement of matches last week provided them with additional preparation time to refine their skills.
“Our expectation for the season is for the boys to enjoy themselves while we provide them exposure to potential scouts. We aim to compete and perform well, utilizing the limited resources we have effectively,” he added.
In Southern Zone results, notable performances included other teams in the Under-18, Under-16, and Under-15 categories, with standout scores that highlighted the competitive spirit in the region.
The journey ahead remains challenging, but the team’s focus on growth and resilience anchors a hopeful outlook for their future matches.
This positivity reflects the broader theme in Fiji’s rugby competitions—where the camaraderie and resolve among young athletes are crucial to their development both on and off the field. As the tournament unfolds, Lami High School is set to embrace these challenges, build on their experiences, and look forward to more competitive outings.
