The district office in Rotuma has recognized the pressing need for solar panels to address the island’s electricity and water supply challenges. Currently, electricity access on the island ranges between 12 to 18 hours a day, depending on fuel availability, leaving many homes reliant on solar energy solutions. Rotuma district officer Luke Sava highlighted that a transition to solar power is essential for ensuring a consistent water supply, as the island’s three boreholes are powered by diesel generators, which limits reliability.
Sava confirmed, “We need solar-powered generators to ensure that both water and electricity supplies are consistently available.” The move towards solar energy aligns with broader efforts to improve sustainability and reduce dependency on diesel fuel.
In addition to energy issues, network connectivity remains a significant concern on the island. Many local offices rely on Starlink kits to access the internet, facilitating communication and service delivery to residents. Sava emphasized the importance of these services, stating, “Without network and internet connectivity, we cannot adequately serve the people.” The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has played a pivotal role in providing the Starlink technology, enhancing access for the Rotuma community.
Furthermore, the Council of Rotuma is working on a five-year strategic plan focused on addressing the island’s needs and challenges. According to Sava, this integrated approach aims to tackle issues collaboratively, fostering enhanced service delivery for the residents of Rotuma.
