Revamping Futures: Fiji’s Bold Move to Support Street Youths

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is advancing its initiatives to support street youths by formalizing the successful “Easter on the Park” program into a comprehensive rehabilitation model. Minister Jese Saukuru announced plans for a structured approach that will include regular outreach events and quarterly engagements in various towns, aimed at maintaining momentum in assisting young people in need.

A significant feature of this initiative is the development of a national database designed to profile street youths, which will enable targeted, data-driven interventions. This database will help identify individuals requiring personalized support, ensuring that the assistance provided is both effective and impactful.

The initiative promises a wide spectrum of services, addressing critical areas such as health, education, skills training, and spiritual guidance. Additionally, there will be pathways for social integration and economic support to help youths transition successfully back into society.

This approach builds on the achievements of previous initiatives. The “Easter on the Park” program, which has already benefited over 50 youths and vulnerable children in Lautoka and Nadi, illustrates the potential for positive outcomes from organized outreach efforts. Minister Saukuru reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uplifting these marginalized individuals, emphasizing that they are not forgotten.

The support from community groups and local organizations has played a crucial role in these initiatives, showcasing a collaborative spirit aimed at fostering resilience and empowerment among Fiji’s youth. Similar programs have shown promise, such as the grassroots network formed during the “Christmas on the Park” initiative, which serves as an ongoing platform for community support.

By engaging stakeholders and leveraging existing successful models, this holistic strategy aims not only to address immediate needs but to inspire hope for a brighter future for at-risk youths in Fiji. The commitment displayed by the government and community illustrates a collective aspiration for inclusivity and positive change.
