The Cincinnati Reds have placed infielder Jeimer Candelario on the 10-day injured list due to a lumbar spine strain, with the move retroactive to Monday. Candelario, 31, last appeared in a game on Sunday where he was 0-for-4 in a commanding 8-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
Throughout the season, Candelario has struggled at the plate, hitting just .113 with two home runs and ten RBIs across 22 games. In response to his placement on the injured list, the Reds have called up infielder Tyler Callihan from Triple-A Louisville and have added right-hander Chase Petty to their taxi squad.
Petty is set to make his major league debut as the starter for Game 2 of a home doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals. The 22-year-old has had a productive season at Louisville, despite a 0-2 record, boasting a 3.52 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 23 innings pitched. Meanwhile, Callihan, who is 24 years old, has demonstrated promise with a .303 batting average, four home runs, and twelve RBIs in 24 games at Louisville, indicating he could provide a boost to the Reds’ infield.
The Reds face a critical point in their season as they navigate injuries while trying to maintain competitive performance. The successful integration of new talent like Callihan and Petty could help the team rally in their upcoming games. Fans can remain optimistic as these challenges present opportunities for players to step up and shine.
