Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged all civil servants to uphold values such as honor, diligence, and discipline as part of a transformative initiative for the civil service. During his remarks on the 2025-2026 National Budget, he emphasized the government’s intent to overhaul civil service operations, aiming to enhance professional standards, restore morale and ethics, and reinforce accountability.
Rabuka stressed that the citizens of Fiji deserve an efficient and effective civil service. To support this enhancement, the Prime Minister announced a three percent pay increase for all civil servants, effective August 1st, which will boost household incomes by more than $30 million and set a new baseline for minimum wage rates.
In addressing the role of Permanent Secretaries, he noted that the Public Service Commission (PSC) is focusing on retaining competent officials by placing them on initial four-year contracts that can be extended or renewed based on performance and achievement of key performance indicators (KPIs).
The Prime Minister’s vision is to cultivate a modern and capable civil service that serves all Fijians with fairness and pride. He highlighted the importance of added responsibility accompanying these rewards, which is critical to fostering a proactive culture within the civil service.
Similar past remarks made by Rabuka highlighted the importance of civil servants’ roles in enhancing public services, especially in crucial areas like education, healthcare, and public works. He called for a collaborative effort among civil servants to identify improvement areas, thereby enabling a collaborative atmosphere that serves the population equitably.
Rabuka’s emphasis on accountability and engagement offers a hopeful perspective on the future of Fiji’s civil service. By fostering this culture of collaboration and responsibility, the government aims to uplift standards in public service delivery, ultimately benefiting all citizens across the nation. This initiative presents an optimistic outlook for a responsive and efficient government that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of its people.
