Crusaders winger Sevu Reece, originally from Fiji, finds his potential call-up to the All Blacks squad for a three-Test series against France in July hanging in a competitive balance. As head coach Scott Robertson prepares to finalize his lineup, Reece faces significant competition from other talented wingers in the Super Rugby Pacific, notably Caleb Tangitau of the Highlanders, Kini Naholo from the Hurricanes, and Emoni Narawa of the Chiefs.

In a recent interview, Reece discussed the competitive landscape of New Zealand rugby, highlighting the depth of talent among wingers. “We’re so lucky in New Zealand with the depth we’ve got with wingers is just crazy,” he stated, acknowledging that while he can focus on his own performance, the ultimate decision rests with the coaching staff.

Having first donned the All Blacks jersey in July 2019, Reece remains eager to add to his caps despite his past challenges, including missing the entire 2023 Test season due to an ACL injury. He made a noteworthy comeback on the field with the Crusaders during the Super Rugby Pacific, ending the season as one of the top scorers, showcasing his resilience and determination.

Reece, who has played 26 Tests for the All Blacks, aims to secure his place in the squad, although he understands the rigorous competition. “If the All Blacks comes, it comes; if it doesn’t, I’ll head further south to Invercargill,” he reflected, emphasizing that representing the national team is still his ultimate goal.

The upcoming announcement on the squad selection creates a sense of anticipation not only for Reece but for fans of New Zealand rugby, as it promises to highlight the exceptional talent pool available to the All Blacks. With the depth and competitiveness within the team, there’s optimism surrounding the team’s prospects for the international season ahead. The positive atmosphere and camaraderie fostered by the new coaching staff enhance the excitement leading up to the matches against France.
