Reds Ready for a Fiery Showdown in Fiji

Seasoned players Angus Blyth and Ryan Smith will take on the lock positions for the Queensland Reds as they face the Fijian Drua in Suva this Saturday afternoon. Head coach Les Kiss is leveraging the depth of talent within the tight five, which has proven instrumental during the demanding SMARTECH Super Rugby Pacific season.

In the upcoming Round 12 match, the Reds will also look to maximally utilize the skills of impactful substitutes Josh Canham and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, who are set to be unleashed from the bench. Kiss expressed confidence in his duo, stating, “Ryan Smith and Angus Blyth will be the starting locks this week. We have great strength and depth in this position and locks who get through a power of work.”

Acknowledging the strengths of the Drua, Kiss emphasized the importance of sustaining performance for the entire match. “We know the importance of sustaining this for the full 80 minutes against a team like the Drua with the threats they possess,” he added.

Rising star Max Craig, a 21-year-old hooker, is poised for his Super Rugby Pacific debut, having already showcased his talents with the Australian Under-20s in 2023. Craig’s journey has included valuable experience through matches with the Easts club and an earlier debut against the Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights.

The Reds will also see Harry McLaughlin-Phillips start at flyhalf, with Tom Lynagh coming off the bench. Both have shown remarkable growth this season, and Kiss is focused on ensuring they maintain momentum from previous successes. “Harry did a fantastic job as a starter against the Chiefs. Tom will make his impact from the bench,” he said.

Flanker Seru Uru expressed personal significance for the upcoming game, as it will be an opportunity to play in his homeland. “I’m always excited to go back to the homeland to play against the Drua. It’s always a big challenge, a tough one,” he noted.

Kiss reflected on the positive momentum gained from a 35-21 victory against the Blues on Anzac Day, deeming it essential for their continued growth this season. With anticipation building, this match presents not just a chance to compete but to connect deeply with the rugby community and their heritage. Fans are encouraged to support their teams as both the Reds and Drua aim to elevate their standing in the league. The game promises to be an exciting showcase of talent and resilience in the face of challenges, reinforcing the spirited nature of rugby.
