Solomon Islanders working overseas remitted a record $61 million USD back home between July 2024 and June 2025, as reported by the Australian High Commission in Honiara. This remarkable figure represents a significant boost in financial support for families and the national economy, highlighting the crucial role these workers play in their homeland’s development.

On average, Solomon Islanders participating in the Pacific Labour Mobility Support Program (PALM) sent home $1,111 per month—approximately three times the standard monthly wage in their home country. The funds, which were transferred through various means including bank transfers and cash, are mainly utilized by families for essential expenses such as building homes and covering school fees.

The increase in remittances can be attributed to the growing number of Solomon Islanders engaged in employment in Australia under the PALM scheme, which has so far seen over 11,000 individuals take advantage of the opportunities available. With expectations of continued growth in remittance amounts this year, there appears to be a promising future for the economic contributions of these workers.

Andrew Schloeffel from the Australian High Commission emphasized the reciprocal benefits of the PALM scheme, stating, “The PALM scheme is a true partnership, with huge benefits for both Australia and Solomon Islands.” He expressed gratitude for the tireless contributions made by Solomon Islanders, who work across various sectors including agriculture, meat processing, and aged care in Australia. Schloeffel noted that remittances not only improve the lives of the workers’ families but also significantly bolster Solomon Islands’ national economy.

With approximately 5,000 Solomon Islanders participating in the PALM scheme, the partnership continues to thrive, fostering economic growth and enhancing community well-being back home. The ongoing success of this initiative reflects a positive trajectory for both Australia and the Solomon Islands, underlining the strength of international cooperation.
