Rabuka Challenges Maharaj to Address COC Delays in Fiji Elections

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has called on Independent MP Alvick Maharaj to communicate with the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) regarding the challenges he is encountering in his appeal against the deregistration of the FijiFirst Party. This request comes amid Maharaj’s critique of the COC for its slow progress in appointing a new chairperson for the Electoral Commission.

Rabuka pointed out that the COC includes representatives from the Opposition, particularly Inia Seruiratu, who could address these concerns. He acknowledged that there are two separate matters at play: one involving the COC’s responsibilities and the other related to the Fijian Elections Office, which is currently handling Maharaj’s appeal.

Maharaj has characterized the COC’s inaction as inadequate, citing the vacancy left by Barbara Malimali’s resignation last September as a significant delay. He indicated that although he awaits a response from the Electoral Commission regarding his appeal, he is committed to pursuing it as per the provisions of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act.

The next hearing for this crucial appeal is slated for August 15, and it will assess allegations made by former party member Mosese Bulitavu, who claims that FijiFirst violated its own constitutional rules concerning its leadership meetings.

The call for Maharaj to engage with the COC highlights the necessity of collaboration and communication among political bodies to ensure that electoral processes are streamlined and fair. This ongoing dialogue demonstrates a commitment to upholding democratic principles, which the electorate can view positively.

Summary: Prime Minister Rabuka has urged MP Alvick Maharaj to address the COC regarding challenges with his appeal against FijiFirst Party’s deregistration. Maharaj criticizes the delay in appointing an Electoral Commission chair. The separate matters involving the COC and the Fijian Elections Office underscore the need for collaboration to ensure fair electoral processes. The next hearing is scheduled for August 15.
