Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau has raised concerns regarding the understanding of government systems by Opposition MP Ketan Lal. Tuisawau’s remarks come in light of Lal’s call for his resignation following the recent collapse of the Vuniyasi Bridge in Nadi. Lal deemed the incident as a severe failure of the government to prioritize the safety of Fijians.
In his defense, Tuisawau noted that despite Lal’s years at the Fiji National University, he appears unable to comprehend the complexities of governance. Furthermore, he pointed out the irony in Lal’s criticisms, particularly given recent resignations from Lal’s party leadership, including notable figures such as Voreqe Bainimarama and Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
Tuisawau emphasized that Lal’s position in Parliament was secured through public votes, urging that Lal should reflect on his accountability as an elected official. This exchange highlights the ongoing tensions within Fiji’s political landscape, particularly regarding infrastructure safety and management.
While the political atmosphere may seem contentious, it presents a vital opportunity for constructive dialogue aimed at addressing public safety concerns and the state of infrastructure. The hope remains that through such discussions, governmental policies and practices can be strengthened, ensuring the safety and well-being of the Fijian populace in the future. Overall, the current tensions could catalyze positive changes and improvements in the governance of public works in Fiji.
