A three-month initiative targeting safety and compliance among Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) began today under the National Joint Enforcement Order, a collaboration between the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted the urgent need for this operation, citing growing concerns over dangerous driving behaviors that jeopardize passenger safety. “Every Fijian deserves to travel safely on PSVs,” he asserted, emphasizing that the responsibility placed on PSV operators is substantial. Each time a passenger boards a vehicle, they entrust their safety to the driver, underscoring the critical need for adherence to traffic laws.
This enforcement effort will involve checkpoints, random vehicle inspections, and mobile patrols in high-risk areas across the Central-Eastern, Western, and Northern Divisions. The operation aims to address non-compliance with safety standards that have become increasingly problematic on the roads.
Rokosawa urged PSV operators to honor the trust placed in them by adhering to road regulations and prioritizing the welfare of their passengers. “Driving safely is essential, especially under adverse conditions,” he stated. The initiative also encourages the public to actively participate in reporting unsafe driving behaviors, fostering a communal responsibility for road safety.
Recent similar efforts have underscored the need for vigilance, especially during festive seasons when reckless driving tends to spike. The LTA is taking decisive action to restore discipline on the roads and promote a culture of accountability among drivers, paving the way for safer journeys for all.
Amid concerns, there is a sense of optimism that these proactive measures will lead to a significant reduction in accidents, creating a safer environment for every road user in Fiji. By reinforcing responsible driving practices and focusing on public safety, the initiative stands as a hopeful step toward a future with fewer accidents and enhanced road safety.
