Primary School Teacher Shortage Sparks Urgent Response from Education Ministry

The issue of a shortage of primary school teachers topped the agenda during the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held yesterday in Tamavua Village, Suva, where representatives addressed the Ministry of Education.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro stated that the ministry is actively working to tackle this challenge.

“The scarcity of teachers has been a consistent concern for numerous schools within the province. We are aware of this situation and are committed to finding effective solutions,” Mr. Radrodro explained.

He noted that this issue is a long-standing challenge passed down to the Coalition Government from previous administrations, particularly concerning the shortage of primary school teachers. As part of the response, efforts are being made to recruit secondary school graduates who are open to teaching at the primary level.

Mr. Radrodro also acknowledged the specific demand for teachers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

“We are collaborating with the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLS) in the upcoming year to enhance the recruitment of teacher trainees,” he said. “Our goal is to inspire them to engage in this initiative and graduate as educators in high-demand areas.”

He urged students in the province to aim high.

“Dream beyond the confines of the classroom. Opportunities are always within reach, so believe in yourself as you strive to accomplish your goals. Stay committed to your aspirations and always prioritize your faith in everything you undertake.”
